What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that "sandblasts" the skin using aluminum oxide crystals to remove the top layer of the skin and dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion not only reveals the younger, tighter, and more radiant skin underneath, but also promotes the growth of new cells in the deeper layer of the skin and stimulates collagen production to further even out skin texture and appearance.

Microdermabrasion is generally recommended for

  • Dull, oily or leathery skin texture
  • Minimizing enlarged pores
  • Polishing and reducing fine lines
  • Mild acne scarring
  • Mild pigment irregularities
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Minimizing blemishes
  • Elimination of white and black heads

Microdermabrasion benefits

  • Virtually no side effects
  • Gives the skin an overall fresh, healthy-looking glow
  • Nonsurgical, safe, effective procedure
  • No anesthetic required
  • Excellent for skin sensitive to chemical procedures
  • No recovery time

How is microdermabrasion performed?

A cleansing toner is applied to the skin to remove excess oils for better application and penetration. A self contained wand is manually passed over the skin in areas of damage or all over the face. The machine delivers fine, sanitary aluminum oxide crystals to the face that "sandblasts" away dead skin and impurities. The procedure lasts about 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards a cotton ball saturated with a soothing toner is passed over the face then a re-hydrating cream and sun block are applied.

How often is microdermabrasion treatment recommended?

Individual microdermabrasion treatments are recommended every two weeks. When performed with an alternating skin care treatment, the protocol would be microdermabrasion, followed two weeks later with an alternating treatment, followed two weeks later with microdermabrasion. Four sessions of each treatment are recommended depending on skin condition and concerns. Maintenance sessions should be sought to keep skin healthy and glowing.

Is microdermabrasion painful?

No, the treatment is performed with little discomfort and is adjusted to your comfort level. At the most, sensitive skin might experience a sensation resembling a light sunburn or windburn. After treatment, the skin has a pink glow, and you can resume your normal activities immediately. The procedure can be done during lunch hour.

What should I expect after microdermabrasion treatment?

You can expect to feel as if you have a mild sun burn or windburn. You skin will feel very dry and may peel. This is natural and is the purpose of the procedure. You should regularly apply a high quality moisturizer as well as a high protection sun block. Do not expose your face to sunlight for long periods of time, not even tanning beds. You should not use any exfoliating scrubs or lotions beforehand or afterwards for at least 3 days. Your skin will be smoother and the damage will be lessened.
